Biography

Andrej Košir, PhD, b.s.c math is a full professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana. He is active in a broad research fields including: user modeling and personalization (user models, recommender systems), user interfaces (machine learning method design, statistical analysis), visual data analysis for nonintrusive user data acquisition, optimization (numerical optimization, genetic algorithm), operations research in telecommunication (optimization of TK systems), signal processing (system modeling, statistical signal modeling), image and video processing (object recognition, age and sex recognition), social signal processing and statistical analysis of datasets and experiment design.

Highlights from international cooperation include: guest researcher at University of Westminster, London, UK (optimization using genetic algorithms), guest researcher at University of Waterloo, Canada (wavefractal coding algorithm for digital images) and guest researcher at North Carolina State University, USA (numerical optimization and “anytime” algorithms).

He is a member of research program P20246 Algorithms and optimization of telecommunication systems and a member of advisors of seventh framework project group BIOTACT. He is a course leader of four university level courses at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, and a course leader of a PhD course at the same faculty.

Project work includes collaboration on projects from the field of multimedia and optimization methods especially in intelligent networks, user interfaces and user modeling. Domestic project include 3D data biometrics (Lastrid), and several projects on user tracking. International projects include: IST VICTORY, LIVE, IST Content4All, IST Tiramisu, P2People, Share It, IST Muffins, IST MyTV, ACTS STORit, ACTS SMASH.

Management experiences include managing project IGSI – VoD (optimization of a video on demand system), managing workflow on project Lastrid (3D biometrics) and chairing user tracking via webcam projects. He managed several industrial projects from the area of signal processing and information systems. Management experience also includes organizing research of several MSc and PhD students in Laboratory for digital signal, image and video processing. He was a coorganizer and cochair

of EMPIRE Workshop (Emotions and Personality in Personalized Services) at UMAP 2013 conference. He is a workshop chair of at Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition FG2015.

Assoc. prof. Andrej Košir is the author of several scientific papers, a chapter of an international monograph and several international conference papers. He is a reviewer for projects submitted to ITA technological agency and article submission reviewer in scientific journals on the field of signal processing and education. He is a member of board of directors in Slovensko društvo za visokošolsko didaktiko, he is managing IEEE promotion and  membership acquisition for the Slovenian Section IEEE, member of society for pattern recognition, members of section for operational research. He is a member of a Committee for international education ratification at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana. He was also awarded the Vidmar prize for his educational work.
